St. Jean de Luz-Mansle

Frankrijk (Winter 2010/2011-16)

It takes some time before we decide the weight limitations are not for us. We declare ourselves "local traffic". An advantage is that we can read French as opposed to Spanish, Portuguese and Basque.

It looks more prosperous here. Which means also: traffic jams!

The free road through the Les Landes region is as good as an (expensive) toll road.

At this truck stop we decide to stop for the night. We park as far away from the noise as possible.

IMGP4967
The characteristic vegetation of Les Landes. During the first part of the nineteenth century large parts of the department were covered with poorly drained heathland (lande in French) which is the origin of its name. The vegetation covered rich soil and was periodically burned off, leaving excellent pasturage for sheep, which around 1850 are thought to have numbered between 900,000 and 1,000,000 in this area. Most of the sheep departed during the second half of the nineteenth century when systematic development of large pine plantations transformed the landscape and the local economy.

After we have updated the various web sites we are responsible for, we drive on north along the N 10. Almost 90 mi of straight, uneventful road. With the cruise control on 50 MPH the only issue is staying awake...

IMGP4976
Around the city of Bordeaux is a wide ring road. Here it crosses the Gironde river on its way to the ocean.

... en de Dordogne.
It also crosses the Dordogne. Compared to the broad lazy river here, the Dordogne to the east is much more interesting.

A place for the night along the N10 north of Bordeaux, the "Aire de Bédenac".
Bédenac, a huge place where truckers spend their lawful rest hours. Ample space for one little school bus.

IMGP4999
The same Route National nr 10 goes all the way north to Paris. Parts are 4-lane motorway, parts still 2-lane. The completely flat landscape of Les Landes has changed into the sloping Charente.

IMGP5013
Angoulème offers good parking places for motorhomes. Unfortunately the chilly weather doesn't invite us to a long walk.

IMGP5002
The Charente river flows through the city of Angoulème,

One of our guide books, the one which is usually wrong, points us to a parking in front of the (closed) camp site of Mansle. This time the book was right.

And across the street is a small, but stylish restaurant. We'll know more about it after tonight...

IMGP5018

Some colour on a grey day!

No doggies allowed in the supermarket.
