After the move

On August 15, we are expected in Haulerwijk early in the morning for the handover of our house. So it is more convenient to spend the night before there in the motorhome (and spend another pleasant evening with our neighbours Dirk and Anita). After the handover, we will return to East Frisia for a meeting of the network ‘Jewish Life in East Frisia’ (the first time for us) in Neustadtgödens.

The programme includes a walk through the village and a visit to the former synagogue, now a small museum (for us not the first time we are there, by the way).

As we are travelling with the camper anyway and the weather is still nice, we decide to spend the night in Wiesmoor and have dinner on a terrace there.

The next evening - after returning home - we have a barbecue in our own garden.

From 22-25 August the German-Dutch (radio) Amateur Meeting takes place in Bad Bentheim, nearly on the Dutch-German border.

It is possible to camp there with campervan, caravan or tent and of course to set up an antenna. Unfortunately the conditions are not great.

On Saturday is a radio flea market. Transport there and back by minibus has been arranged. There also is a stand  of the VFDB, the association of hams in Post and Telecoms, where Ernst is a regional member.

There would have been a social programme for getting to know each other (cross-border fraternisation is said to be the main aim of the meeting), but most of it is cancelled or held at another time without any communication. The weather also throws a spanner in the works.

On Sunday, on the way back, we visit the very impressive Esterwegen memorial site. Here the horrors of 15 prison camps in the area during the National Socialist regime are remembered.

On Monday, we are surprised by the opposite neighbours (kindergarten) with a song and a homemade bread, salt and a bread board. All this to welcome us to Hesel, heartwarming!
