Wolfgang 60

Already six months ago, we were invited to join Wolfgang's farewell to his 50s in Bodenheim. So we planned a motorhome trip for the end of September. To Bodenheim, it's almost 500 km (310 mi). That calls for an overnight stay halfway.

It will be the motorhome site in Schwerte, which is new to us.

We take a short walk through the old town centre ...

... and end up at Das Lokal where we enjoy a delicious meal of fried zander (pikeperch) fillet on Mediterranean vegetables in the courtyard.

After another 3-hour drive, we arrive at our familiar motorhome site in Bodenheim in the early afternoon. Full! Fortunately, someone is about to leave and we can take over his spot. Since the renovation, there are 12 places available, eventually there will be around 16 campers. Why so crowded? The place is free (donation is requested), the weather is beautiful and tomorrow there is a walk through the vineyards with wine tasting.

Some more acquaintances turn out to be there, whether for tomorrow's birthday party or not, and spontaneously 10 people decide to go out for dinner in one of the Strausswirtschaften. It always takes us a while to find something to eat, but we end up with Mediterranean Flammkuchen and fried Camembert. Glass of wine with it (actually... 2) and for Ernst a beer. It was very cosy but the night will teach Sylvia that she had better stick to one a glass of German wine.

Then on Saturday, the party at the Villa Kerz

As usual in Germany, the tables are set with great care and we start with coffee and cake. Unfortunately for Ernst, there is no tea ... The cakes are home-baked and partly brought by the guests.

The birthday boy is happy! After the cake, many guests go on the wine walk (we skip) and after that there is a toast with champagne and a buffet supper. Of course, all with a choice of various wines from the winery. Sylvia takes it easy on the wine, but ends up drinking a glass of semisweet wine which she can tolerate better.

On Sunday, we are expected at 3 pm in Rosbach/Sieg (municipality of Windeck), about a two-hour drive away. Sylvia's great-aunt Berta Seligmann is from this village. She was married to Max Heumann, a brother of Sylvia's grandmother. Max (in the museum referred to as Moses), Berta and their daughter Anneliese perished in Riga in 1943/44.

The house of Berta's brother, also a Max and one of the family's few survivors of the Shoah, is now a Memorial Centre for the family and for the rural Jews of this area. The little museum is not often open but today there are two guided tours.

The house was made available by the family on condition that one of the rooms would be furnished with a shabbat table in the style of 100 years ago. An interesting detail is that the lady of the house at that time was originally Catholic, converted and taught herself Jewish religious laws and traditions.

The tour was given in a compelling way and with great knowledge by Saskia Klemp.

There are several groups of Stolpersteine in the village including this one for members of the Seligmann family.

We spent the night 8 kilometres away in Windeck-Dreisel on the little river Sieg. The place is without further facilities but very nicely located with a small beach across the river. Everyone enjoys the last warm day. We have dinner outside for the last time this year.
